How many residents per year?
6 Resident slots per year, for a total of 18 across the 3 years of training.
Is Family Medicine the only residency at the hospital?
Yes! We are an unopposed training program, with Family Medicine as the only specialty at UNC Health Appalachian.
Are there any required away rotations?
Intern year you travel to Asheville for inpatient Peds (4 weeks) and third year you travel to Asheville for Pediatric Emergency Medicine (2 weeks). Housing is provided for required away rotations.
Do you work nights?
During intern year you have 2 weeks of night float coverage that is with a upper level resident. The remainder of the time night float is covered by second and third year residents.
What do your graduates do post residency?
Our training allows for a wide variety of opportunities after residency. We have graduates practicing as hospitalist, traditional outpatient/clinic, and a mixed practice as residency faculty. Additionally, we have placed residents in sports medicine and surgical obstetrics fellowships.

We have been recognized by the Rural Medical Training Collaborative (RMTC) as having the highest rural retention rate among North Carolina residencies at 76%. We TRAIN RURAL and STAY RURAL.
